Spot Editing

Spot Editing places AI-inpaint spots on the live 360° panorama. Each spot is a sphere-correct region (shape + pose + prompt). Spent previews become durable graph drafts until you Commit (promote into the project) or Discard (delete them on purpose).

Placing a Spot

  1. Open a render under Renders, then open Spot Edit from the viewer toolbar (Edits section).
  2. Pick a shape and preview style so the footprint is readable on the sphere.
  3. Click the sphere to place a spot; the aiming overlay shows the footprint as you move.
  4. Set a directional prompt for that location.
  5. Use the side-pane companion list for multi-spot selection (“Acting on”).

Context menu & companion list

Right-click (or the tool context menu) exposes spot actions. Lock position(s) / Unlock freezes or frees yaw/pitch/roll/FOV for the selected spot(s) — never labeled “FOV Lock” alone. Placement is locked so you can re-roll prompts without drifting aim.

Spot preview styles

How spots read on the viewer:

  • Outline — high-contrast cased outline
  • Feather Band — core + dashed feather edge
  • Ghost — faint fill, crisp edge
  • Filled — warm-tinted fill on the texture

Use the Style Picker in the spot side pane.

Moving spots

  • Drag unlocked spots to reposition (cursor: grab → grabbing).
  • Locked spots stay fixed for pose; unlock first to move.
  • Escape aborts an in-progress move.

Preview → durable draft (not “bake on Generate”)

This is the modern lifecycle. Do not expect a single Generate click to bake every placed spot into one final node.

Step What happens
Preview GPU runs the inpaint for the current spot / acting set.
Settle When the preview finishes, the result is materialized as a graph node with status draft.
Hold The draft stays on the derivation graph and stays attached to Spot Edit while the tool is open.
Leave tool Closing Spot Edit detaches the session — it does not delete the draft. Re-open Spot Edit to re-adopt held drafts.
Commit Promotes the active draft in place into a final project step (graph head advances).
Discard Deletes uncommitted draft work deliberately — the only intentional kill.

Graph status: draft is not the same thing as a hextile config tile state: draft|baked. Draft graph nodes are uncommitted tool work; config tile bake is a separate config concern that applies when a Spot commit promotes.

Unlocked vs locked Preview

  • Unlocked spot: another Preview on the same owner typically rewrites the single held draft (one alternate at a time).
  • Locked spot (Lock position): multi-draft mode — each settled Preview appends another variation (soft cap 8; refuse when full, no silent eviction). See Lock-mode multi-draft below.

Different spot while one draft is held

If you hold exactly one draft and start Preview on a different spot, Spot auto-promotes the held draft first, then starts the new preview (same idea as Tile Preview’s one-draft auto-promote on a different face).

If you hold two or more variations and Preview another owner, you get a resolve dialog instead of silent auto-promote — see below.

Commit, Discard, and what you see

Tool chrome uses:

  • Preview — run / re-run the inpaint for the current acting spot(s).
  • Commit — promote the active held draft. With multiple filmstrip frames the label becomes “Commit — discard N other(s)” so WYSIWYG is explicit: only the selected frame survives.
  • Discard — remove uncommitted draft(s).

Commit order when multiple variations exist: non-active “losers” are removed first, then the active frame is promoted. If a loser delete fails, promote aborts (no half-commit).

Lock-mode multi-draft (filmstrip)

When multi-draft is available

Filmstrip (“Variations”)

When drafts are held, the tool shows a Variations (N) filmstrip:

  • Click a frame to make it active and attach it on the sphere.
  • Per-frame discard removes one variation; Discard all clears the set.
  • Active frame is what Commit promotes.

Resolve dialog (N ≥ 2 + other owner)

With two or more held variations, starting Preview on a different spot opens a resolve dialog:

  • Commit selected — promote the active frame, then continue to the new owner’s preview.
  • Discard all — delete the set, then continue.
  • Cancel — leave the set intact; do not start the other preview.

Unlock with drafts held

Unlock refuses while any variation remains in the set. Commit or discard first (toast: commit or discard N variations first).

Conversion / other ops while work is held

Some conversion or ownership changes refuse while draft or residual pin work is held — Commit or Discard first so you do not orphan or mis-apply held previews.

Clearing placement vs discarding drafts

  • Clear / clear selection on the companion list removes spot placements (with directional history undo where applicable).
  • Discard removes graph drafts / variations from the hold set.

Do not confuse the two.
